Online Discussion : Threats to Creativity and Freedom of Expression

Instruction Given By Teacher: All students: Here is attached a brief interview of Javed Akhtar. There are some rumours about A R Rahman to give music in an Iranian film on Mohmad Paigambar. It is not permitted under Quran to portray Mohmad Paigambar in painting or moving picture. If A R Rahman is involved in such film, it may hurt religious sensibilities of Indian Muslims and so he is threatened that there may be Fatwa against him. Secondly, there is a film being planned on the life of Tipu Sultan - a Muslim ruler of Mysore. It is rumoured that Rajnikant will play the role of Tipu Sultan. This has hurt religious sensibilities of Hindus. It is also belived that Tipu was against Tamils and so no Tamil should play any role in the biopic on Tipu. Well, the majority exerts their likeness and prejudices over the minorities and in the process construct a 'culture'. The said culture is appropriate for the majority and so most of them believe it to be moral...

Online Discussion: Gender Bias in Temples

Instruction given by teacher: After reading following article, you shall: Two ideas which you like the most. Do you agree with this observation: " what is assumed to be a 'temple' is essentially a structure built around very simple natural rock formations. The structure then is the boundary that defines and delimits the sacred space around something very organic and natural. This creation of boundaries is the essence of patriarchy , for with boundaries come divisions and hierarchies, that prop up the privileged . The physical boundaries express psychological boundaries that emerged long ago, before the structures, before gods and goddesses " After reading the article and ongoing debate on gender bias in temples/mosques/churches, what is your opinion about it?                     Why were temples built in India? They did not always exist. Before temples, people worshipped...

ONLINE discussion : Ancient vs Modern: Isn't it stupid to think who is better?

Instruction Given by Teacher:      Read attached writeup from Chitralekha magazine.        Isn't it true that such writings which narrowly focuses on "Who is better?" conditions our mind to think of "comparison"  always in terms of 'good and bad?. Isn't it true that such conditioning narrows our thinking? We are unable to restore connection between the past and the present when we see things as antithesis to each other.  We always think that one should be better than the Other. The idea of mutual coexistence ceases to exist in our mind and thus we fail to coexist with difference.        The writer would have read Dryden's Essay to understand an important point to keep in mind while we "compare". "Discussion of Ancient and Modern shud not be for who is better, it should be more filename tally about how "history" itself functioned and should be read, thus it should be about the rela...

Online Discussion : Is GOD Needless hypothesis?

#   Instructions by Teacher     After reading in the given context, your task is to answer these questions:   1) Have we outgrown the psychological,  emotional and spiritual need of God? 2) How far can u agree with Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris who have cogently and eloquently argued that far from being a negation of moral codes and an ethical life, atheism as a form of consciousness raising is an affirmation of spiritual transcendence? 3) is it time we outgrew that 'Needless hypothesis'?    # My answer of the given task:      #While I agree with jug suraiya on his opinions about God,religion etc.But it is not necessary to believe in God to be a good person. In a way the traditional insight of God is outdated. One can be devotional but not religious. Some of the best people in history did not believe in God,while some of the worst deeds were committed in his name.    # paradise lost by Milt...

Here I’m sharing poem “Fern hill “by Dylan Thomas.

Here I’m sharing poem “Fern hill “by Dylan Thomas. Now as I was young and easy under the apple boughs  About the lilting house and happy as the grass was green,  The night above the dingle starry,  Time let me hail and climb  Golden in the heydays of his eyes,  And honoured among wagons I was prince of the apple towns  And once below a time I lordly had the trees and leaves  Trail with daisies and barley  Down the rivers of the windfall light.  And as I was green and carefree, famous among the barns  About the happy yard and singing as the farm was home,  In the sun that is young once only,  Time let me play and be  Golden in the mercy of his means,  And green and golden I was huntsman and herdsman, the calves  Sang to my horn, the foxes on the hills barked clear and  cold,  And the sabbath rang slowly  In the pebbles of the holy streams.  Al...

Here I'm sharing term “A non-sequitur”.

Here I'm sharing term “A non-sequitur”.      Here “non” means not and “sequitur” means to follow  Is a Latin term which means it does not follow it is a conversation and a literary device often used for comedy purposes. Example:    Maria drives a car. She must be a wealthy person.       David eats broccoli. David should love to eat meat.              The sentences do not follow a proper sequence in non sequitur and words do not give the same meaning as readers suppose them to do.    This term means fallacy(absurd) and it is used in logic ,the term itself is absurd and it is a comment that this term because of its apparent lack of meaning also means absurd .It also means being humourous and confusing.       Thank u..

Here I’m sharing poem “Punishment” by seamus Heaney :

Here  I’m sharing poem “Punishment” by seamus Heaney : I can feel the tug of the halter at the nape of her neck, the wind on her naked front. It blows her nipples to amber beads, it shakes the frail rigging of her ribs. I can see her drowned body in the bog, the weighing stone, the floating rods and boughs. Under which at first she was a barked sapling that is dug up oak-bone, brain-firkin: her shaved head like a stubble of black corn, her blindfold a soiled bandage, her noose a ring to store the memories of love. Little adulteress, before they punished you you were flaxen-haired, undernourished, and your tar-black face was beautiful. My poor scapegoat, I almost love you but would have cast, I know, the stones of silence. I am the artful voyeuur of your brain’s exposed and darkened combs, your muscles’ webbing and all your numbered bones: I who have stood dumb when your betraying sisters, cauled in tar, wept by the railings, who would connive in civilized outrage yet understa...
