Here i'm sharing review about short-story "The Portrait of a Lady" by Khushwant singh

 Introduction:

               Khushwant singh was born in 1915 at Hadalicollege.He is a leading newspaper columnist and author of nearly 110 books.Educated at Goverment college,Lahore and king's college London,He has been a lawyer,public Relations officer ,Minister of External Affairs and most successful Editor of the illustrated weekly of india.
          Khuswant singh has been nominated member.Rajya sabha.He returned his padma Bhushan award to protest against :'Operation Blue Star' In 1984.Recipient of several national and international honours,he is author of the two-volume History of the sikhs and the widely-acclaimed novel on the partition of india,A train to pakistan(1955).His stories are collected in The mark of Vishnu and Other stories(1950),A Bride for the sahib and other stories(1967) and Black jasmine(1917).

ABOUT THE STORY:

           Khuswant singh has paid a tribute to his grandmother in The Portait of a Lady.Ever since the author grew up,he found her old and wrinkled .He found it hard to believe that she had once been young and pretty,or even had a husband.She virtually brought up the author.
             Then he had to move out of the village to the city ,where he studied.He went abroad for higher education and returned after five years.That day his grandmother collected the women from neighborhood and sang for several hours.Next morning she was taken ill and died a peaceful death.Even the sparrows she used to feed mourned the death of the author's grandmother.She was a perfect lady-nobel,kind and generous.
