Instruction Given by Teacher:
Post – Viewing Tasks:
(Give responses to these questions in the comment section below this blog-post)
  • ·         How faithful is the movie to the original play?
  • ·         After watching the movie, have your perception about play, characters or situations changed?
  • ·         Do you feel ‘aesthetic delight’ while watching the movie? If yes, exactly when did it happen? If no, can you explain with reasons?
  • ·         Do you feel ‘catharsis’ while or after watching movie? If yes, exactly when did it happen? If no, can you explain with reasons?
  • ·         Does screening of movie help you in better understanding of the play?
  • ·         Was there any particular scene or moment in the movie that you will cherish lifetime?
  • ·         If you are director, what changes would you like to make in the remaking of movie on Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’?
  • In the beginning of the movie, camera rolls over the statue of King Hamlet out side the Elsinore castle. The movie ends with the similar sequence wherein the statue of the King Hamlet is hammered down to the dust. What sort of symbolism do you read in this? (Clue: In Book IX of 'Paradise Lost', Satan reflects on his revenge motive:       "But what will not ambition and revenge; Descend to? Who aspires must down as low; As high he soared, obnoxious, first or last, To basest things. Revenge, at first though sweet, Bitter ere long back on itself recoils." Is it not King Hamlet's ambition to avenge his death responsible for the downfall of his kingdom which is symbolically pictured in last scenes?)
  • While studying the play through movie, which approach do you find more applicable to the play? Why? Give reasons with illustrations.
  • Which of the above mentioned approaches (in Pre-viewing task) appeals you more than other? Why? Give reasons.

Here My Response given Task:

Respected sir,

Thank you for showing the movie of hamlet .It written by 'kenneth Branagh', based on William Shakespeare.I really enjoyed the movie hamlet.

1).yes,the movie is as faithful as the original play 'Hamlet'.The play start the scene-1 the statue of father hamlet and the ends with fall of statue of father Hamlet. The scene of statue is shown the fall of thron. It is great acting play.

2).After watching the movie my perception about the play the character of Ophelia's role of minor and other two character Rosencrantze and Guildenstern are not shown mad in the play and they are not given more importance in the play.so,I m watching after the movie Chang the situation of the character.

3).yes, I feel aesthetic delight, when I watched this movie in the beginning scene-1 when ghost is appear and the end of this movie I feel aesthetic delight because of end of the tragedy.
4).yes,I feel catharsis while watching movie ,when hamlet's behavior with her mother very badly and I feel catharsis when Ophelia cry on death of her father and her behavior like a mad.
5).The screening of the movie helped me to understand the play in the better way.And the play is also helpful to remember every scene ,situation of character and most of remember the scene of ghost.
6).yes.I cherish the particular scene or moment in the movie.
1)-The death of Hamlet' s father king hamlet and her mother marriage her uncle and hamlet's behavior with his mother in right way because one month not finished king hamlet's death before hemlet' s mother marriage her uncle.
2)-The Ophelia and hamlet love with each other and both end is tragic same as Romeo and Juliet.
7)-Suppose I m director, I m change the many things and the role of character .And the most like in the play the role of female character the heroin in the play is not given more importance. And I change the character of Hamlet's age because in the play showing the age of hamlet is not younger and older .And I m changed the end is not tragic but happy ending.
8)-I could find the symbolism in the play when the statue of Hamlet's father king Hamlet is shown darkness and symbolize the fear of hamlet's mind.

9)-During studying the play and watching the movie I would found two approaches in the play.
1)- The philosophical approach.
2)-The feminist approach.
*The philosophical approach is can be possible in hamlet's character because hamlet possesses so many things.Hamlet was student philosophy.
*The feminist approach is can be possible in Ophelia's character.

10)-Before watching movie I felt that mythological and archetypal approach because the scene of ghost is the show of myth of literature and then the story of hamlet was not the playwright's invention but drawn the legend.

Thank u sir showing the movie Hamlet......
The play is full of wisdom of Shakespeare's maturity ,major theme is Revenge .
It is melodramatic ,thrilling and sensational 'Ghost' , play within play ,fencing duel fight with poisoned foils.
Play full of plot and counter plots. It is not only tragedy of revenge but is a tragedy of human soul.

Thank u.........

Poem: Were I To Choose by Gabriel Okara

Were I to Choose   “When Adam broke the stone             and red streams reged down to           gather in the womb,           an angel calmed the storm”, “And I, the breath mewed             in Cain, unbliniking gaze                 at the world without                              from the brink of an age”.             Gabriel is immersed in folk tradition and ballad influences of tradition and culture are found in his poem. His poems are regional as well as universal. His poems are sometimes lyrical and full of music.                     The poem ‘Were I to choose’ is reminiscent of yeast poem called “Adam’s Curse.” The poet has tried to compare Adam’s toiling in the soil with the Negros working in the soil. They broke the stone themselves which was their very foundation. The red streams are symbolized for the multilingual diversity that reaches the womb Africa.           Cain in this poem metaphorically represents the next generation. ‘I’ in Ok

Poem: "Daddy" by sylvia plath

Poem: Daddy You do not do, you do not do Any more, black shoe In which I have lived like a foot For thirty years, poor and white, Barely daring to breathe or Achoo. Daddy, I have had to kill you. You died before I had time— Marble-heavy, a bag full of God, Ghastly statue with one gray toe Big as a Frisco seal And a head in the freakish Atlantic Where it pours bean green over blue In the waters off beautiful Nauset. I used to pray to recover you. Ach, du. In the German tongue, in the Polish town Scraped flat by the roller Of wars, wars, wars. But the name of the town is common. My Polack friend Says there are a dozen or two. So I never could tell where you Put your foot, your root, I never could talk to you. The tongue stuck in my jaw. It stuck in a barb wire snare. Ich, ich, ich, ich, I could hardly speak. I thought every German was you. And the language obscene An engine, an engine Chuffing me off like a Jew. A Jew to Dachau, Auschwitz, Belsen. I began to talk like a Jew.

Poem: The Mystic Drum by Gabriel Okara

The Mystic Drum:                     The Mystic Drum is Okara’s love lyric. The Mystic Drum evinces a tripartite ritual pattern of imitation from innocence through intimacy to experience. By comparison to the way of zone as manifested in the experience of Zen master, Chin Yuan Wei-Asian this pattern resolves itself into an emotional and epistemic logical journey from conventional knowledge through more intimate knowledge to learn of experience empowers the lover to understand that beneath the surface attractiveness of what we know very well may lie an abyss of the unknown and unknowable belching darkness.                   But experience teaches us at this stage of substantial knowledge not to expose ourselves to the dangers of being beholden to this unknown and unknowable reality by keeping our passions under strict control including the prudent decision to ‘pack’ the ‘Mystic Drum’ of our innocence and evanescence making sure that it does not ‘beat so lo
