About the author:

O.Henry is the psuedonym of William Sydney Porter (1862-1910),an American short story writer.He was born in Greenboro, north Carolina,and settled in Austin,Texas,where he became a blank-teller.His first of many collection was Cabbages and Kings(1904).His other collection of short stories are The Four Million and The voices of the city.

About the story:

Jimmy Valentine was a professional safe cracker.Released from jail,he picked up his suitcase containing tools and went to a small town of Elmore to start a new life there.He opened a shoe-store there and assumed the name of Ralph Spencer.He made many friends and fell in love with Annabel,a banker’s daughter.The two were engaged to be married In two weeks.Then a strange thing happened.it forced Jimmy to try his professional skills at cracking open a safe in which a little girl Agatha had shut herself.But he was in trouble when the detective Buggy price,who had been following him all along,met him at the poor.
